About
Hi! Welcome to Rainy Day Pennies!
Rainy Day Pennies focuses on sensible living, life goals, retirement, and smart purchasing the way grandma used to to it – by saving. You’ll find many mentions of grannie in my articles. A survivor of the 1929 depression though no longer with us, she remains a huge inspiration in reminding me how to live with less, and appreciate more.
If you want to be successful at something, you need to learn from someone who is successful. Want to be a millionaire? Me too! Let’s learn from people who have done it. Want to be debt free, stay debt free, and financially independent? I have stories, tips, and strategies to share with you.
If you believe in low to no debt living, you’ll find like company here. I enjoy philosophizing about life balance. Live today, tomorrow and beyond. I employ many frugal tactics, though I also have some rather expensive hobbies, like foreign travel. You’ll also find tidbits of productivity musings as I am a GTD nerd. I strive to be a minimalist, though I have much progress to be made in this area. I believe in philanthropy and teaching others to help themselves.
While personal finance is a serious topic, I don’t always take myself so seriously. I hope you don’t either. My writing can be light-hearted or serious, but never intended to be invective.
About Me
I’m Cathy and the hostess of Rainy Day Pennies. I recently paid off $35,000 worth of credit card debt in 5 years the plain old fashioned way. I cut spending where needed, saved money, and prioritized aggressively. I didn’t declare bankruptcy or settle with creditors. I paid my bills on time, every time, and maintained a good credit score. Now that I am debt free, I am optimizing my savings and retirement goals, while living life.
I am a "Gen X" career professional specializing in software automation. My writing is a fusion of conservationist/hippie/yuppie/techie. I live in Seattle after all!
I live modestly through most days of the year, and save so I can enjoy my true passions: traveling and learning. Standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon, exploring the ruins of Chichen Itza, snorkeling coral reefs in Cozumel, kayaking with humpback whales in Maui, and eating tapas and drinking Spanish wine in Barcelona makes me appreciate life on this wonderfully unique spot in the universe. My style is more REI outdoorsy rather than high fashion.
